ELE 802 Trends and Issues in Language Assessment
The course examines the trends and issues in language assessment, both ‘traditional’ and alternative means of evaluating achievement (learning), as well as theories of language performance in relation to communicative language use. The students critique language tests, rubrics for evaluating performance, effects of language assessments on learners, instruction, even on discrimination and oppression of
test takers.
This course begins producing a clear understanding of the issues and challenges in language assessment. Students also critique language assessment tools based on emerging views about language assessment. The course involves conducting a language assessment research based on the evolving views about language assessment as well as translating socio-psycholinguistic issues and trends in the language classroom into micro-research.
An intended output of the course is a limited but useful research study conducted in the context of student’s educational work places throughout the Philippines. Having a similar methodology conducted in different language settings in the country will hopefully yield valid and reliable insights into student learning.
