The course introduces the concepts of new literacies in the 21st century as an evolving social phenomenon, current research and shared cultural practices across learning areas. It gives pre-service teachers opportunities to differentiate the 21st century literacies such as globalization and multicultural literacy, social literacy, media literacy, financial literacy, cyber/digital literacy, arts and creative literacy, and science literacy. Pre-service teachers are expected to apply field-based interdisciplinary explorations and other teaching strategies suited to the 21st century literacies. In the end, the pre-service teachers are expected to develop instructional materials reflecting the 21st century literacies.
