PROF ED 03: THEORIES OF LEARNING
The course develops preservice teachers’ understanding of the range of influential theories of learning that have impacted the field of education. They investigate how the empirically supported views inform educational practice and help students across grade levels to learn more effectively. They study selected behaviorist, cognitivist, constructivist, humanist, and connectivist learning approaches and their practical implications for teaching. They likewise examine the most prominent theories of academic motivation to understand the underlying causes of learners’ behavior both internal and external, and determine ways to make them thrive. Special topics include learning outcomes and transfer of learning to expose them to different learning areas and realize how learning is applied in varied contexts. The course also highlights the science of learning, the roles of mindset, happiness, and digital technologies in enhancing learning. Learner-centered, inquiry-based, collaborative, and technology-enhanced activities are applied to help pre-service teachers acquire knowledge of the different theories of learning and motivation that would aid their future instructional decisions.
